Chiesa dei SS Quirico e Giulitta

The church of Ss. Quirico and Giulitta is located in an isolated place, outside the town of the hamlet of Veglio. Originally there stood a small medieval church, of which the splendid testimony of the apse (now a side chapel) remains, considered one of the most beautiful and intact architectures of the Comacina area and dating back to between the 11th and 12th centuries.

The current church was built at the beginning of the 17th century, after Ninguarda's visit, and appears as a large building with a rectangular plan covered by a single roof which includes the sacristy rooms and the large room to the left of the presbytery used by the Confraternity of S. Rosario and in turn incorporating the lower part of the medieval bell tower.

The façade has a large lunette and is adorned only with shaped pilasters and crowned at the top by a trabeated tympanum in which there is a roundel with the dedicatory inscription DOM DD Quirico et Jolittae.

The interior presents itself in post-Tridentine forms, with a single nave covered by a barrel vault resting on a high entablature, under which the four arches at the entrance to the side chapels, rectangular and shallow, look out.

The stuccos, statues, paintings and scagliola frontals are the work of artists from Intelve. Among the oldest paintings is the image of God the Father, recently restored, located in the central part of the tympanum of the main altar. The work of La Vergine del Rosario appears of great orchestration in the second chapel on the left built in 1642 and commissioned by Captain Antonio Selva of Veglio.

The first chapel on the right was built in the presbytery of the medieval church and is dedicated to the Virgin, in the niche of the imposing baroque marble altar the small wooden statue of the venerated Madonna with Child (Madonna delle Grazie) is preserved. From the sides of this altar it is possible to access the medieval apse and discover the original paintings from the 13th - 14th century: scenes from the Passion of Christ are reproduced on the wall, the Doctors of the Church are depicted in the apse basin, and busts of haloed prophets on the main arch.
