A mountain in the Lugano pre-Alps on the border with Switzerland, the Sighignola is defined as the Balcony of Italy for the enchanting and singular panorama it offers. Since 1913 the Italian Touring Club has promoted the tourist vocation of this natural area, subsidizing the construction of the road. The following year, a restaurant, now disused, was also opened. The tourist purposes of the Summit then had to coexist and were put to the test, for more than 37 years, by the abandoned construction site of the arrival station of the Campione – Monte – Sighignola cable car, which was never finished. In 2008 the FAI took action with awareness-raising initiatives, starting a technical table with the Lombardy Region, the Swiss Canton, the Municipalities of Lanzo d'Intelvi and Arogno until 2010 when I Luoghi del Cuore intervened even more concretely in the recovery of the area. All this contributed to the demolition of the eco-monster by the Swiss authorities which ended in 2012.
The border line between Italy and Switzerland is today placed on two different terraces on which the Swiss flag stands out on one side and the Tricolor on the other. Especially from the latter, from a height of 1,320 metres, it is possible to admire a panorama that ranges from Lake Lugano to the Grisons Alps up to Monviso and reaches peaks such as Monte Rosa and Monte Cervino. The Balcony is equipped with a small refreshment point open during the summer season and on weekends.
